Northern Greece

Greece is one of the favorites of the summer. It is visited annually by more than 20 million people, mostly in summer time. In general, tourists are to be found in the hot spots, like Mykonos, Santorini or Crete. Those are the most popular islands, visited by the biggest amount of people.

I do not argue that those islands are extremely beautiful and provide a great infrastructure for tourism. In my opinion, Greece is more than three popular islands, that could get overcrowded. Greece is a big, beautiful and divers country. Big cities, mountains, perfect turquoise water and even one of the best cuisines in the entire world, all combined make Greece the beautiful country that it is.

One of best places in Greece, to have it all, is the northern part of the Country.

The cities in Northern Greece

Thessaloniki is the second largest city in Greece, after Athens. It is the largest municipality in the Northern part of the country, with a population of over 1 million people, in the metropolitan area. Thessaloniki is a port city, with opening at the Aegean Sea.

This is a historic city, like most in Greece. It was founded in 315 BC and it was named after the sister of Alexander the Great, Thessalonike. In the Byzantine Empire, it was the second largest and wealthiest city.

Thessaloniki is the cultural capital of Greece. If you are interested in the history and culture of this country, for sure, Thessaloniki should be added to your must-see list.

Other important cities in the Northern part of the country are: Alexandroupoli and Kavala. They are the typical small-medium Greek cities, but tourism is also a big part of the economy of the area. Each place is ready to welcome guests and I think that these are the best spots to blend with the locals and discover more of what this country has to offer.

The Natural Beauty

The northern part of Greece is so beautiful. You have the opportunity to explore mountains, deltas and also swim in the Aegean Sea.

On the most visited area is Halkidiki. The mountain range of Holomontas, are dominant in the northern and central part of this region. It is an area that will enchant you with breathtaking views and amazing natural beauty.

From Alexandroupoli to Thessaloniki, it is an extremely large coastal area with amazing beaches, gulfs and lagoons. You can find some tourists ready beaches, but the most beautiful are known only by the locals. Just going from point to point on Google Maps, you can discover some hidden gems.

The most visited part of the Northern Greece is the Thasos Island. It is directly connected by a ferry system. The island provides an enormous number of accommodation places, tavernas and even resorts. Some of the most famous areas on Thasos are: Golden Beach, Marble Beach and Paradise Beach.

It deserves to be admired

If you choose to stay in a small city in this part of Greece, you can also save some money. The prices are for the locals. I’ve discovered that every time I would go deeper, in a touristy area, the check would double and the quantity and sometimes quality will lower. Give them a try for an authentic Greek experience. It was one of my favorite destinations, so far.

In my perspective, the Northern Part of Greece, deserves to be given a chance. Here the natural beauty is quite different from the Southern Part. All is greener, mountains are predominant and the water is as beautiful as it is in the South. Just imagine relaxing in the water, enjoying an incredible view to the mountains, surrounding the coastal line. For us, this amazing part of Greece, is incredibly…Travelicious.
