Shopping in Florence

Florence is a city of art, culture and history. It is one of the most important cities in Italy. In the medieval times, the capital city of Tuscany was one of the most important European trade and financial centers. Here is where is considered to be the birthplace of the renaissance and the home of some of the most incredible art pieces signed by names as: Michelangelo, DaVinci or Botticelli.

What crosses your mind when you think about Italy? Of course, you’ll think about pizza, pasta, their food in general or their beautiful country with people living la dolce vita. But another important fact about Italians, is that they have an incredible sense of fashion.

Florence is one of the worlds 15 elected fashion capitals. Being a fashion capital, you have to provide…fashion. The city is not just a touristy city, it is also a big shopping tourism landmark.

What?

Everything. Most big names in fashion industry display their goods in the city. Besides them, what I loved the most, was the authentic little boutique shops. Everything Italian made, can be found while wondering the streets of Florence.

In this part of the country, they pride themselves with leather craftsmanship and have a lot of shops where they display their leather goods. From the smallest leather gloves, to incredible boots and bags, all is authentic and Italian.

Where?

Everywhere in Florence. If you just visit the city and want to do a little shopping also, I recommend walking on the streets leading to Piazza del Duomo. The narrow streets are a joy to explore. There you will find a lot of fine leather shops, souvenirs and also a lot of clothing.

Another option for hardworking shoppers is going to an outlet store. Near the city, stands one of Europe’s biggest outlets.

Barberino Designer Outlet

The outlet mall is part of the McArthurGlen Group. They offer you over 130 stores to enjoy. There you will also find restaurants and coffee shops.

What I really like about this outlet is that it has an open-air concept. It looks like a little neighborhood with a promenade street and its shops.

The outlet is really easy to reach, even though it is outside the city. They have a bus shuttle, from Florence to Barberino. The return ticket costs 13 Euros.

Near Barberino, at just a walking distance, there are some factory outlet stores of different designers.

When?

That is the most important question. If you love shopping, you will probably already know the most important sales seasons.

We went just before Valentine’s Day. I think that this was a big catch of the season. Imagine that we also bought from there a trolley bag. We flew to Florence with one checked in bag and returned with two.

In that exact period, we have discount to discount to discount. So, the price was discounted for outlet price, there was still the winter sales season, so an additional 30-50% discount was applied. To that discount, they had applied at the cashier another 10% for being in the Valentine’s period. By taking their shuttle bus, we had something like a shopping tourist passport, that gave as an additional 10% discount. I think that you understand my point. Best period: beginning of February.

For summer clothes, I still have to figure it out. If you have some recommendations, please feel free to write them down in the comments section.

Would we recommend?

Yes! Shopping in one of the world’s fashion capitals is amazing. The quality and style are phenomenal. A shopping trip to Florence is an incredible experience if you go on a girl’s trip, but also it can be a very fun couple’s trip. Florence is one of the best places to fill your bags and empty your cards.
