All about the Ubud Monkey Forest

If you are planning to spend some time in Bali, for sure the Ubud Sacred Monkey Forest is on your must visit list. I can understand why, since I was so excited to visit it, but also, I was not disappointed when I did.

As the name says, this is a forest full of monkeys. This place is the home of the Balinese long-tailed macaque. In over 12 hectares of forest, more than 1000 monkeys reside here.

In my opinion, this place is worth visiting not just by monkey enthusiasts, but for the love of nature. The forest is impressive, clean and here you will also see water fountains, statues and temples.

Where is the Monkey Forest?

This beautiful natural park is located in the village of Padangtegal, Ubud. It is in close vicinity of one of the main streets in Ubud area and many caffes and restaurants can be found at the entrance.

When to go?

It is best if you go in the morning. Eat your breakfast quickly and go directly, that is how you avoid tourists’ crowds and you are free to take as many photos as you want. In the morning, mostly will be tourists that stay in Ubud area and can get here quickly. For those staying in other hype Balinese towns, their tours will start after 10 am and will have to drive for at least 40 minutes. The opening hour is at 9 AM, so you will have time to enjoy your breakfast.

Please keep in mind that the whole visit will take you about 4 hours, if you want to see everything and to take photos.

How much will it cost?

The entrance fee cost is 80.000IDR (about 5.4USD or 5.1 EUR) for adults and 60.000 IDR (about 4 USD or 3.8 EUR) for children. The tickets can be bought from the entrance or online, on their official website.

For such a small cost, you will experience something never seen before. It is totally worth it and all the money gathered from ticket sales go directly to conservating this beautiful forest and to protect de monkeys.

What to wear?

First of all, this forest is also the location of three important temples: Pura Dalem, Pura Beji and Pura Prajapati, so you should not show off. Best to wear is long dresses, or long skirts and for men short (but not very) pants.

Let the bling-bling at the hotel. Monkeys are attracted by everything that is shiny, so jewelry will catch their eyes. If you are planning to wear them after, put them in a closed pocket of your purse. The same applies to sunglasses. Monkeys are famous for stealing sunglasses, hats or even wigs.

Can I bring my phone or camera?

Yes. But keep it always in your hands or your backpack. You can take as many pictures as you want, but never leave your electronics unsupervised.

Are monkeys aggressive?

They have the tendency to be aggressive only when they are provoked or they have to hunt. Don’t bring food inside the forest, they will do anything to try to steal it from you. Another important fact is to avoid looking into their eyes and smile. This is the way a monkey will show that it is furious, so they will think you are angry at them. This doesn’t mean that you have to stay serious, but try not to make eye contact with them.

Do not try to pet the monkeys, they don’t like to be touched, they will feel attacked. It is possible a monkey will try to touch you, it is ok, do not try to reject it.

What to do if a monkey bites you?

Besides trying to avoid being bitten more, call for help. If you can, clean the wound immediately and seek a doctor’s help.

There is a big chance that some mosquitoes will bite you, so we do recommend to put on some mosquito repellant before leaving the hotel room. For us Autan Tropical works the best.

Is the Monkey Forest any fun?

Those rules were not meant to scare you away, but to give some advice for your own safety. You should not go to the forest with the fear that something will happen to you, if you just enjoy your day and let them enjoy theirs everything will be absolutely fine.
