Athens is one of the cities that you must visit. The capital of ancient and current Greece is formidable. It is history on display. It doesn’t matter if you are a history enthusiast, here you will find out about the roots of our entire civilization. This is our top things to do in Athens.

1. Ancient Athens

Being one of the oldest cities in the world, Athens is filled with archaeological sites. Actually, in almost every spot in the city, you will find ruins of the ancient Greeks and Romans. The most important ancient ruins to visit are the Acropolis.

The Acropolis, located on a hill in the center of Athens, is a plateau filled with ancient ruins. It is actually a fortified limestone hill. On the site, you will discover the famous Parthenon, The Theater of Dionysus, The Odeon of Herodes Atticus, The Temple of Athena Nike and the Erechtheion.

After your visit at the Acropolis, it is a great idea to visit the Acropolis Museum. In the museum you can find artifacts that were found at the Acropolis and in the city of Athens. The museum is remarkably interesting for the history lovers.

Another important archaeological landmark to visit is The Temple of Olympian Zeus. Its construction began in the 6th century BC and it was supposed to be the greatest temple in the whole ancient world. As its name says, it was built to honor Zeus.

2. Plaka

Plaka is a lovely and vibrant neighborhood in Athens. The whole area is pleasant to walk around. It starts from the Acropolis and ends at Syntagma Square. Plaka’s main street is Ermou, a pedestrian street filled with shops (international and local).

3. Monastiraki Square, Syntagma Square

The Monastiraki Square is probably the most famous square in Athens. It is one of the busiest places in the city. The square is located near Hadrian’s Library and at a short walking distance to the Acropolis. It also hosts one of the main metro stations, shops and taverns, and also a flea market on Sundays.

Another important square in Athens is Syntagma Square. It is larger than Monastiraki and it may not feel as busy. One of the most important things to do in Syntagma Square, is to go to the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. The Tomb is guarded by Evzone Soldiers, dressed in traditional uniforms. The most remarkable thing is that they change guard every hour.

4. Panathenaic Stadium, National Garden

If you are fan of sports, or not, you must not miss seeing the oldest stadium in the world. The Panathenaic Stadium was constructed 330 BC and modernized, by covering it in marble, in 144 AD. Here, the opening and closing ceremonies of the first modern Olympics took place.

The National Garden is a green oasis inside a busy city. It is a community garden and I promise that it is one of the most beautiful ever seen. The whole area is like a breath of fresh air. As an ancient city, of course that you can also find archaeological ruins in here. The National Garden hosts plants that are local, but also a great number of exotic ones.

5. Go to Piraeus

Piraeus is not just a harbor; it is actually a small city near Athens. It is very easy to reach, you just take the metro. Here, you can walk to the marina and admire the views, but you can also go for a walk on the streets near the marina. For us, it was one of the most picture-perfect views of a city. The little streets were so clean, with perfect Greek houses and orange trees planted near the side walk. Almost at every corner, you can find little coffee shops to grab a Greek Frappe. On the opposite side of the marina, there is also a public beach, with restaurants and bars surrounding it.

Athens is Travelicious

These were our Top Things to do in Athens. Alongside them, I would also like to add that, at every moment of your visit, you can stop to eat some delicious Greek food, a fruit salad bowl or to drink a Greek Frappe or a Greek Coffee. For us, Athens is delicious and so…Travelicious.
